A lot of people when we talk with them about figs are surprised to know how many varieties there are. Contrary to general opinion there are not just two (green and black) but over 800 known varieties. Figs have spread all across the world taken regularly by monks and many old varieties can still be found growing in the grounds of old convents and monasteries.
Having arid ground where there were already a few local species growing we decided that cultivating figs would be an ideal choice. We have had mixed success due to many plants having been nibbled by the goats before fences were in place, but we are now slowly establishing a few trees of a number of varieties from across the mediterranean and Asia.
We are currently establishing further varieties including many rare and ancient Italian varieties.
The figs we produce range include green, yellow, red, black and striped varieties. They also vary in size and some varieties have two harvests a year.
