We have been breeding meat rabbits for a number of years as we believe it is an under utilised traditional meat source that has fallen out of favour over the last 50 years.
We currently breed three pure breeds of rabbit at our farm. Californian, New Zealand and German Giants. The later is a pet breed and one we keep for visiting children to cuddle in our bunny area, but the first two we rear for meat.
Unlike typical modern commercial farms, we do not keep our animals caged constantly and only have 3 litters from each female a year, allowing them a month in a communal paddock area between weaning one litter and being reintroduced to a male again.
In addition our kits are not kept in small indoor runs, but once weaned are reared in colonies with outside areas. Although this means that the rate of growth is slower, we believe the quality of life for the animals and subsequent quality of meat produced at our farm is worth the additional investment.
We feed our rabbits a 100% organic diet, mainly consisting of Erba Medica (Alfa Alfa), Oats and rain water. The waste from our rabbit runs is also recycled into our composting process.
For those of you familiar with rabbit breeds, you may have spotted that are two meat breeds are neither rare, nor are they very traditional, both having been established around the turn of the last century. However, we are currently sourcing a fourth breed, the Champagne D'Argent, which is one of the oldest known breeds. Originally bred for its fur and meat as early as 1631. We hope to move more towards this breed to hold true to our overall farm approach.
As well as meat sales in our onsite farm shop, we also supply restaurants and shops. Please contact us if you are interested. We also sell tanned hides and craft products made from the hides and often have live animals available both for breeding and as pets. For further details, all of these options can be found in our online shop.
