Rare Breeds

We focus on traditional breeds for a number of reason:
  • Firstly we believe many of these breeds were better farm animals producing better quality meat, wool etc
  • Additionally they are more suited for the type of farming we do.
  • Many of them have been deselected over the years due to the focus on commercial farming and are now at risk of extinction
  • They rarely need help to birth their young
  • They do not require routine medication
  • They are good foragers and do not need high proportions of commercially grown grain or cereals in their diet
  • They arte adapted to our local environment and climate

Girgentana

This impressive breed of goat originally brought to Italy by the Spartans over 2000 years ago, is our breed of choice for goat's milk. Their milk is renowned for its excellent balance between fat and protein, sweet smell and use for cheese. This breed that was once numerous is now endangered. Come and see our herd at the farm
